Docs NightclubLimerick, IrelandSouthern Ireland is currently going through an economic boom at the moment, and this inevitably reflects in its populations leisure pursuits, subsequently its club culture is on a bit of a roll. A recent refurbishment, Doc's nightclub, in the South Western town of Limerick is an excellent example of a club celebrating its eighth year investing in its future. Situated in the basement of an 18th century refurbished mill Doc's, the name having no relation to the dock's of the town but to its owner Doc, a concert violinist in background, but definitely a larger than life club owner. The refurbishment was completely cosmetic, retaining the beautifully long brick vaulted cellars, and concentrating on the lighting, sound and furnishing aspect. Beta Systems of Mallow were called in to update the lighting system and took the honour of being the first company in the world to install an Avolites Azure controller to operate the lighting. Beta systems rearranged the existing equipment of tas mini Ultra Scans from around the dance floor and positioned them at one end creating a whole new feature from them, whilst installing 8 new Clay Paky Miniscan HPE's as the main intelligent lighting effect to line the length of the dancefloor. Beta also installed a Laser Innovations Mirage Twin Scan desk with a Twin Scan effects head for a Coherent Purelight Star 3.5W laser at the opposite end to the tas Mini Ultra Scans to provide the main feature of the club lighting. On the audio side the existing system of an all JBL speaker system, driven by C-Audio amplifiers, was revamped allowing improved dispersion, also due to the age of the building and the fact that its thick walls meant there were dramatic variations in temperature a Sabine real-Q and reference microphones was installed to maintain the sound quality under all conditions. Doc's has three elements to its operation, firstly a feeder bar which is open throughout the week and secondly the club itself which operates four nights of the week, Imminent changes in the Irish licensing laws will allow the club to bring into play its third option of cutting off one half of the club, the dance floor half, by means of huge centrally hinged doors and letting the all seating area operate every night as a late licence bar.
